My name is Eleni and I also respond to Elle which is a nickname many of my internet friends call me by.
I live in beautiful Greece with my husband and our two daughters. We are a bilingual family, as my husband was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. We luckily enjoy the best of both worlds and our family traditions have a little bit of both cultures, even though we’ve never been to Canada as a family. And since I live in a bilingual house, my blog had to be bilingual, too!
Above everything else in my life I’m a mom, and a proud one! But while managing this blog, I also try my best to be a cook, a baker, a food photographer, a web designer and of course a blogger. Successfully or not, I can never be sure. But what I do know for sure is that I do everything with love and a passion for perfection.
I am currently studying for my Associate’s Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. I’ve also finished various courses on Nutrition, Food Safety, Cooking and Children’s Nutrition.
My healthy eating
My interest in healthy eating and nutrition started many years ago and has been growing ever since. There are many skeletons in my weight issues closet. I’ve struggled with emotional eating and bingeing (I still do occasionally – nobody is perfect), distorted body image issues and tried numerous kinds of dieting in the past. In 2011, I found myself in the obese BMI category and reached my highest weight ever. I had to do something that would solve the problem for good. My reasons were simple. I didn’t want to be a bad example for my children and I wanted to lead a healthy life with them and for them. I started reading a lot about nutrition, I committed to exercise for life and I soon began to shed off the weight. I lost almost 55 pounds (25 kilos). And except for some seasonal ups and downs, I have maintained a healthy weight ever since.
It was a journey of self-discovery. So many misconceptions about weight, health and eating habits had to be identified and deleted or replaced by a more balanced way of thinking. Weight loss is a change that really starts from within. And healthy living is a different path for each and every one of us.
Cooking runs in the family! My mom and both my grandmothers had a reputation for creating miracles in their kitchens. Mom still holds the title of the most talented cook in the family and her Greek phyllo pies are to die for. And, of course, she’s the one who passed the cooking bug to me.
Having learned so much about proper nutrition, I developed a passion for healthy cooking. I love experimenting and creating easy, simple recipes – and a few more complicated ones – with healthy ingredients. Occasionally, a “sinful temptation” like a dessert or a not-so-healthy dish bolsters my beliefs for balance and moderation.
My healthy living
As our ancestors wisely believed, A healthy mind in a healthy body. The latter requires exercise among other things. I fell in love with exercise the moment I realized what it can do for my body. It made me feel strong and healthy again and it brought back huge amounts of energy that parenthood had taken away. I’d always loved exercise. But it was the first time I realized the quality it can add to our lives. Instead of… shouting it out from the rooftops, I try to be an exercise-motivator for my family and friends.
My blogging and work background
My first-ever time blogging was on sparkpeople.com, where I shared my weight loss journey and the truths I was discovering about it. In 2014, I started a blog with some recipes and healthy tips written in Greek. But many of my friends on sparkpeople complained about not being able to read my recipes.
And that’s how Healthy Bits and Bites was born!
In the past I’ve worked as a proofreader for a publishing company and also as an English language teacher.
My hobbies and likes
Photography has always been one of my favorite hobbies. I also love baking and I enjoy making surprise birthday cakes and cupcakes for family and friends. You can see some of these creations here.
I love good books and good movies. I recharge my batteries only in the presence of trees and mountains. The smell of rain touches my heart and, as you may already have guessed, my favorite season is autumn.
I never get tired of discovering new facts about nutrition. I take new courses all the time and never stop learning. It’s one of my favorite things!
